The author does not support any arguments of either side of the dispute over the role of the historical community in public discourse. Following Joseph Margolis’ definition of histo rical relativity and so-called Margolis-Quine thesis, the author is looking for justification for sometimes radical differences in shaping the world by historians. In general, they arise out of dissimilar strategies of defining the truth. Those strategies come from either rationalist or bibli cal-phenomenological ways of thinking that are present in the European culture and co-create the grammar of the European culture (A. Pałubicka). An agreement between historians could be reached by adopting a belief that the options belonging to both the first and the second ways of thinking are nothing more than embodiments of known for ages cultural patterns, which however disproportionate to each other, have been in constant historical competition for do mination.
