Abstract
The article critically analyses the assumptions, historical determinants and consequences of a project of a new branch of theology – theology of science, created by Michał Heller and his associates. This project, both in the formal aspect of its assumptions and in its epistemological core, contains aporiae characteristic of theological perception of reality, including the reality of sciences. The source of these aporiae is an internal decision concerning the identity of theology/ theologians. This decision is profoundly systemic. Therefore, beyond its overt part, connected to critically perceived identity of theology (constituted by already mentioned axiom of participation in divine cognition, possible through the divine self-revelation), it also contains its hidden part, which is a constitutive phantasm for theology and for self-awareness of theologians. This phantasm almost never becomes a subject of critical reflexion inside theology, but it is its systemic presence that is in fact responsible for appearing of theological universalist claims and, at the same time, for the fact that no questions are being raised inside theology about such claims.
