On the Status of the History of Science as a Scientific Discipline in Poland

If we want to define Polish contemporary position of the history of science and technology, a research area aspiring to be acknowledged as scientific discipline, we must include elements of diagnostics of its today’s theoretical status, but also, and probably above all, actual external conditions influencing its development potential. It concerns in particular financial conditions and policy of central institutions responsible for the development of science in our country, including perception of this research area. Both categories of factors influence one another and these mutual relations determine the opportunities to study the history of science in Poland. The author of this article outlines these relations.
