The article falls in the realm of the history of science – in its part included in the history of idea. The subject of analysis is ideological life of Polish students. In the realities of academic studies in Poland of the 19 th century it was subject to continuous repressions connected with the policy of Germanization and Russification. Nevertheless, students were building an ethos of emerging social class – intelligentsia. Autonomy of academic schools was creating enclaves, organisational structures of students’ interpretation of great ideological theories – they were forming their own ideological repertoire. After regaining the independent state, autonomy of academic schools was subject to growing limitations. Historical and political events exerted pressure that modified the system of ideas and organisational structures that matched them. Certain negative effects of the institutionalization process emerged and led to replacement of ideas with ideology.
