Abstract
The article deals with the issue of the scholar’s reception. The subject of the research is the global interest in the works and the figure of Alfred Korzybski (1879-1950). He was a non-standard scholar and did not fit the mainstream of science. His work, however, inspired various thinkers, especially writers. In works that mention his participation in the intellectual life of the US in the years 1930-1950 he is often called “a forgotten scientist”. The author of the article, using modern methods of researching the flow of information on the WWW network, examines the real interest in Korzybski and his geographical and linguistic distribution.

Abstract
Medical biotechnology is an application of the results of studies of molecular processes in living organisms for practical purposes, especially for diagnostics and disease treatment. Progress in medical biotechnology is tightly connected with the development of genetic engineering, which enables more and more precise manipulation of genetic material. This article presents an outline of issues related to gene therapy and stem cells, a problem being in the centre of interest not only of scientists and physicians, but also raising great expectations of the society. The purpose of the article is not only to draw attention to the perspectives of medical biotechnology but also to point out certain problems and limitations, however resulting not from often exaggerated (alleged) threats of modern technologies, but because of excessive expectations, incomprehension of the essence of science and of non-scientific factors influencing scientific studies.
